Parents "Inside"

What conditions are needed to continue parenting while undergoing the experience of detention? How is parental bonding nurtured while experiencing punishment and restriction? In this paper, we would like to shed light on some of the issues surrounding the debate on parenting in prison, in light of theoretical reflections and face-to-face meetings with detained mothers and fathers who are rethinking their experience. Parental bonding is fundamental for the psycho-affective development of children: the affective dimensions may not necessarily be related to the crime committed and the respective sentence. On the other hand, however, from an educational point of view it is necessary to  guide parents and children who experience the suffering and separation of imprisonment differently, in order to give a name and meaning to what they are living, mitigate the traumatic aspects and enhance the reflective dimensions. Moreover, the need to work on a systemic level, in terms of rights, social ties, and psycho-pedagogical intervention is highlighted. Keywords: parents, prison, children's rights, education.  A quali condizioni si può vivere ed esercitare la genitorialità nell’esperienza della detenzione? Come coltivare il legame genitoriale in un vissuto di pena e restrizione? In questo contributo si vuole far luce su alcuni snodi del dibattito attorno alla genitorialità in carcere, alla luce di riflessioni teoriche e di confronti diretti con papà e mamme detenuti che ripensano la loro esperienza. Il legame genitoriale risulta fondamentale per la crescita psicoaffettiva dei figli: le dimensioni affettive possono non essere legate al reato commesso e alla rispettiva pena, ma d’altro canto, dal punto di vista educativo è necessario accompagnare genitori e figli che sperimentano in maniera differente la sofferenza e la separazione dell’incarceramento a dar nome e senso a ciò che vivono, per attenuare gli aspetti traumatici e potenziare le dimensioni riflessive. Si evidenzia, inoltre, la necessità di lavorare a livello sistemico, sul piano dei diritti, dei legami sociali, dell’intervento psico-pedagogico.
